I have only done 4-5 cemeteries, an absolute expert I am not, and I got the mirror idea off another internet site. When I do take photos in a cemetery my priority is to be careful and respectful.

In cemeteries many times you will encounter stones that are buried or covered in growth. There is the question whether to unearth stones that are flat with the ground (and over the years have had mother earth reclaim them) or to do any cleaning on a stone, where organic growth is quite thick. Some people may say you should leave well enough alone. I have cleaned and uncovered to be able to photograph a stone (am I right or wrong?)

To uncover a stone I use a utility knife (like you can buy at any hardware store, the brand I use is OLFA), a small white nylon scrub brush, old used paint brush, a small dust pan I made out of aluminum, and a common water bucket. By feeling around in the ground for the edge of the stone I follow the square around and remove the earth and grass into the pail. Then using the old paint brush and the small dust pan I remove the left over dirt.

For cleaning a stone I only use water and a small nylon brush. I wet the stone then splash it off, and let dry. Quite often this makes it a lot easier to read. Again should a person doing photos for this site ever clean a stone in that way? I have (tell me if I am wrong). Now if a stone was really old and I thought I would damage it in any way then I would not touch it. I try to be very careful.

I also use a mirror to reflect light onto a stone. The only problem I have with the mirror - which is 16 by 24 inches - is that if a stone is quite big with lettering covering the whole surface that size of mirror will not light up the whole area. In that case I will take two photos, one lighting up the top and then the bottom. Where it works good is if one side of a stone is in full sunlight but there is also lettering on the other side in the shade - with the mirror it can also be put in the light.

Kate's Cemetery Kit

I have a "kit" in a small backpack that I use in the cemeteries:

- long handled umbrella
- wide putty knife
- sharp knife
- spray bottle of water
- whisk broom
- stiff brush
- terry cloth rags
- newsprint paper
- oil pastels
- used bread bags (for debris)

I would say the best time to go out is an overcast day with no rain or storms in the forecast. If I don't like a picture, I go back and do it over, especially where the morning and afternoon lighting is concerned.

I realize that some people are submitting photos that they have traveled a fair distance to do, so that's not always a viable option, which is where the umbrella can make a world of difference. You can use it to completely shadow a flat stone that has glare on it, or block a lot of the glare when you have to shoot into the sun. I hate any stone that has a north face on a sunny day!

The DeForest Resoration Project (Headed up by Southern Ontario Paranormal Society and Pam Smith) is a not for profit event that will take place Sunday October 20th at the very historical Halton Region Museum. Located within Kelso Park, Milton, Ontario. The event will take place between 12pmEST and 4pmEST. The objective of this event is to raise money to help restore a very historical piece of the Town of Milton. That being the DeForest Pioneer Cemetery.

Essentially beginning as a family plot, within a few year it expanded to other families in the surrounding areas close to the original DeForest homestead which was recently destroyed for new development. At one time there was the house, the barn, schoolhouse/church (now a guest house on the property). All the remains is the cemetery, which virtually lay in bad repairs.

After several hurdles, the town of Milton has allowed us to raise money to help them bring some of those repairs to DeForest. With the aid of the Halton Region Museum, The Milton Historical Society and Smith's Funeral Services in Milton, which is the present line up.

The event itself is going to be within the old Alexander Barn (now apart of the Halton Region Museum). Not only will it be a very historical themed event, but very interactive and intimate. Mc'd by Nocturnal Frequency Radio hosts Steve Genier and Alex Rondini (who will be broadcasting live on location during the event).

Six speakers who graciously donated their time and knowledge into various areas of the paranormal for this event. They are as follows:
- Justin Villareal (Lake County Ghost Research/Illinois. US)
- Dave McRae (Port Robinson and a voice actor)
- Greg and Dana Newkirk (WhoForted? Online Magazine into the Paranormal)
- Richard Palmisano (The Seekers Group and author of Ghosts of the Canadian National Exhibition, Ghosts and Journeys into the Unknown)
- Steven Rumbelow (Director of several films including AUTUMN as well as the TV series BEYOND)
and live via video broadcast from the UK David Farrant (President of The British Psychic and Occult Society and author on several books dealing with the Highgate Vampire)

There will also be some silent auctions going on throughout the event, details for this will come later.
